Aug. 5th, 2007 11:47 amWhoa! Lots of updates all of a sudden! I'm currently trying very hard to catch up and all of a sudden have the urge to just annoy you guys with some small happenings in my life. Bear with me. ; D
OK, so day before yesterday was good. Last thursday I finally got the call from DSM and soon I'll have an assessment, and if it comes out good enough, I've got the job I want so much. It'll be really awesome for all sorts of reasons, but I'm mostly looking forward to seeing Alwin and Arie's faces when they see me sitting in the cafetaria during the break. XD
Really though. I just know so many people there it isn't funny anymore. But back to friday: Dad came back from his holiday and I wanted to catch up and tell him about this awesome computer I found for him. More on that later, by the way. Anyway, in the end he invited Frank and me over to get some Indian food. I really want to go back some time and get the more spicy variant of the meal I had, since it was dee-lish. Marked as spicy, but... I guess my taste buds have died off a bit? So anyway...
Before the dinner we already went to Mycom, since dad needed a new DVD player for his computer, the old one was broken in my opinion. They'll still be trying to install it in a friend's computer and hoping it'll reach faster speeds there, but I doubt it'll work. Anyway, so when we get back he's like, also, my cooler's been making a fuck amount of noise, should we get a new one? So I open his case, well, I had to, to install the player. Anyway, inside I find this power supply. Not put in horizontally, but vertically, which puts it partially over the cooler of the CPU. Now, for those who don't know how hot a CPU can get, allow me to tell you, very hot.
But the thing was ruined. Dust had crawled into every location and stayed there during 75 degree CPU temp runs. Now you may remember what I said about the videocard? 80 being way too hot? That goes double for a CPU, since it's basically the heart of a computer. Provided it has a heart, that is... But for the sake of anatomy! Anyway, The cooler was ruined. The dust had baked itself to the cooler and it was nearly impossible to get off. Besides, the cooler was small, but high enough to limit the space between the iron wall of the power supply and itself to a mere 1,5 cm's. This is not, and I repeat, NOT enough space to rid your CPU of heat.
Anyway, we went back to the Mycom and asked for a SocketA cooler. SocketA is ancient (I still run it as well, but the newest of the newest, which is 2005 material. XD), so they didn't have it anymore. They advised Norrod. Now, I'm pretty sure I've voiced my opinion of Norrod, which is that they're a bunch of retarded failing-at-assembly screw-up's. I've seen them ruin 2 systems so far. Long story short, I don't like going there. The service was excellent, however, and they had the required cooler. Actually, they had a really advanced, multi-socket cooler, which looked a scary bit like my videocard cooler.
Anyway, to install this cooler I had to take out the entire motherboard to attach a holder on the other end, which worked very well the first time out, but it was scary as hell doing it. I don't like messing around with the motherboard, going back to the anatomy, more or less the veins, nerves and brain of the computer. You fuck something up here, you have to find a new motherboard. Anyway, things worked out as awesome as they could get. The case was more silent, in it's well isolated environment (note: this is bad) it ran a whoopin' 65 degrees, but it managed. I suppose the power supply now got the most heat, since I inverted it and put the coolant strip over the CPU cooler, thus making the power supply take the heated air and cool itself with that.
So yesterday, I went back to get the new computer. Dad wasn't entirely sure if he still wanted to, since the current one was now functioning normally again, and it should, since I fixed it up good, both hardware and software. But, the computer was ancient, it is an AMD 1150 running Windows XP on half of the system resources, which is just too much. Mine, for example, runs Windows on about 0,25%. There may actually still be a virus in there, I'll have to check on that, but I told him, you can run Vista on the other computer, it'll work much better, you'll be up-to-date again, your case is constructed in the most retarded way ever, and besides, I want to see Vista running. I still haven't had the honor of doing so. In the end he agreed.
So we go outside and walk to the car, since he never goes to town by bike or by foot, and in this case, I can't really blame him. Buuuuut, where the car used to be, now is a big empty portion of street. I walk back and ask dad if he actually made some room in the garage to put the car in, he says he'll still have to crush the motorbike to do so. I tell him he MAY just have a small problem here. We walk back to where the car used to be and he's all like... OK, it's stolen, let's not get the computer and go back inside. I agreed.
So he did the whole reporting to the police and everything, and we spent the rest of the afternoon joking about stolen cars, optimizing his computer some more and finding a couple of viruses. Somewhere along the line though, some program set the system to manual IP's. This resulted in some settings being altered and him not getting any internet anymore. In the end dad tried calling Sander, which, to me, was impossible, but he managed to pull it off. together we found the error and fixed it. And also, I found a long lost friend. I suppose it was still a pretty good couple of days.
Also, RO Rap for the win. :'D
Uhm, and I haven't shaven in like, 2 weeks, because I am lazy. XD
