Catch-22

Fan-damn-tastic. Not only does the EU not care about our little ACTA-petitions (over a million people signed against it already, and keep it up!), but the US is attempting to screw us over by presenting us with an unwinnable scenario, called HR-1981. It essentially boils down to this: It's a SOPA, except with the copyright bit chalked out and child pornography put in. "Good idea", some might think, but here's where the scenario becomes unwinnable: Banning child pornography may very well be the best thing since the actual invention of the Internet, but the essence of the matter (tracking IPs and barring them from Internet) still boils down to it that this law will open every door to take SOPA back off the shelves and instate it either way, effectively still killing the Internet. Opposing this will make you look like someone who is OK with child pornography, so that's not really an option, either. The horrible, horrible morale of the story is that we're now being forced to choose which we find more important: Freedom of Internet (and with that, freedom of speech!) or freedom of children (protecting their innocence). And by 'we', I mean US Senators (known for their logical thinking and being adept at separating church and state). Not only is this a horrible choice to make, but both people who are left in doubt and people who favor child innocence (I would blame neither) would morally be unable to sign any sort of petition opposing HR-1981, opening the floodgates to Internet censorship. It's a wonderfully delicate political play, and I'm actually in awe of how well this is thought out, but I'm very much afraid that this is the end of all freedom.

There's an alternative though (See point 4 in the link), which might bring this story to a happy end and both sides will win. We can only hope... ._.
