As many people reading this journal may know, I've had a period (a long one!) where I had trouble getting to sleep, up to points where it took me over 2 hours to even GET to sleep in the first place. I've recently been asked how I dealt with it, and I have never shared my "secret", so here it is:

Meditation.

I'm not even talking about the eastern-style, Shao-Lin (or whichever) meditation, where one completely drifts away into a trance for hours on end. I'm talking about an adjusted version of the western horrified stressful approach to quick-to-bed meditation. I'm saying adjusted, because the whole bullshite 16-page web page I sourced my stuff from contained a lot of scientifically baseless "facts", which seemed unnecessary in my eyes.

Here we go! )

This is pretty much all I have for now. If I have more, I'll add it here. Got questions? Ask away!
lemau: Smiling Shampoo ^^ (Smile)
Rumors about my disappearance have been greatly exaggerated. Not that there are any, but if there were, they would be.

Not much fascinating has been happening with my life, but I've been busy as whoa. Those floors really require a lot of attention, and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with some junk I have and the ample room I also have, but do not want to waste on too many Ikea Billy's. The three I have right now are up, but not in use yet, save for the Shampoo resin kits. All of them made the move pretty much undamaged. Two fell off their foot-pieces, one broke her sword again and one is now missing two fingers that I do not expect to ever find again. I'll have to find something for that as soon as I've got a hobby table of sorts. I'm still aiming for a drawing table (for cels), but it's not planned to be anything I'll be buying this year. Unfortunately, the situation is likewise with the cats. I'll have to put that off for a while, too.

Most financial punches to the face have been non-moving related. For example, yesterday my disk was suddenly getting slower and slower, and at one point reported over 50 hard faults per second, which does not necessarily mean, but is probably indicating that the disk is nearing the end of her lifespan. I intend to get an SSD and 8 Gigs of DDR2 RAM, but the price for a 256GB (mostly NAND) SSD is less than 8GB of (Non-NAND!) DDR2 RAM. Seems a bit unfair to me, but since I only have two memory slots, I'll have to find two pieces of 4GB, double-sided, reasonable-speed RAM for a 64-bit installation of Windows 7. This apparently costs roughly €300, which is nearly twice the amount I'll be putting down for the SSD.

At work, my first program is nearing completion. Or rather, the first stage of it, where the thing is ready to be tested by others. This is a huge milestone for me. I have expressed my desire to make the switch to developer, thus leaving my chemical career behind me. Depending on the financial step I'll be making, or rather if I'm making any at all, it might just be as simple as signing and a handshake. The stress at work is nearing palpable levels due to decisions made off-site. People want to start programming, but they're just not getting to it. This probably will lead to loss of workforce sooner rather than later, and with that, even more delays, as this site is probably the only site actively working on producing something. This may be a slightly simplistic view, as I cannot see the progress of the other teams and the local developers are not being kept up to speed.

I've been gradually getting back into DDO, but unfortunately my new barbarian build test run of yesterday was cut short by the aforementioned disk failures. I hope the fixer-uppers I applied will work tonight.

Probably TMI about fandoms, dreams and forever alone XD )

*er-hem*

I really must resume working on my moving card. the concept version I worked on looked fantastic, except that it looked like the character I shopped in there looked like it belonged there and I looked shopped in. Really weird. Besides, I really need to shave before I take the final picture. Another thing I haven't had made time for.

Not much has happened, save the two big things, so I'll keep this part really short.

Kitchen
Not much to mention here. It all happened in under 6 hours. I now have 5 wonderful pretty big cupboards and a metallic vent hood that's gonna require a lot of cleaning. Pretty soon I'll put the fridge next to it, then the desk, then I can convert my current desk to the dining table, get some chairs and that will be fine.

Floors
Hooboy, this has been the biggest investment and the biggest underestimation of the whole damn place, and I didn't even end up doing it myself. The guy who put it in was real friendly and super-helpful, which was necessary, as apparently someone effed up the numbers for the floor in the hallway, and I was short four boards. In my own rush I also neglected to mention I'd need borders for the 5 doors and the entryway. Also, I got the wrong skirts for the hallway. Guy stayed around while I got/replaced the stuff (and they had to dig DEEP for the boards!) and he put it all in. The best part is that this whole debacle cost me a mere €64, which, while still money, is cheaper than I expected. Not to mention that it was WAY more service than I expected. I'll be getting my doormat from there just because they provided this much service.

And that's pretty much it. Replaced some lights with LED's, although the biggest burners (living room) are still halogen lights. Ordered some pretty decent lights for that, but they haven't arrived yet.

Stay tuned for the gripping finale, where I reveal what lessons I've learned from this.

I scored a lovely Shampoo pic for my moving cards from my friend and fellow Shampoo fan Philippe. All I need now is a pic of myself in front of the place and we're in business. I don't intend on sending the cards before the place is done, anyway. XD

So in the end everything worked out okay, and I can still get the keys tomorrow, but today was definitely the most terrifying day I've had so far, and I sincerely hope I don't have to expect any others alike.

People who read me a lot will know that I disdain all religions equally. While they have the redeeming quality of helping some poor souls back on their feet, and by all means kudos for that, the good they do is overshadowed by the evil that is caused by them. Right now we are so focused on Islamic religion that we are completely forgetting the boy-grabbing priests and money-whoring Jewish and pretty much every other religion that has their own thing. But the one thing that gets to me the most is that every religion preaches tolerance and friendship and love thy neighbor and whatnot, but every other religion, atheism included, is generally wrong and deserve to die.

The big picture is that every big religion has had their crusades and dragging people into the streets and murdering them. It's human nature to kill others to prolong your own genes in a world that is overpopulating rapidly. But that doesn't give you the right to do it. A bible or quran or any book of fairytales does not give you specific rights over someone who reads another book or has a different lifestyle. We are all bound to the same basic human rights and laws. The same human rights and laws that you claim whenever you're feeling threatened. And please, do not confuse that with insulted. An insult is something you can (and usually SHOULD) dismiss. An insult is more often than not a joke gone horribly wrong. But the more you make a fuss about it, the more you will get people's attention. And people love nothing more than inciting, so they'll just keep picking on you. The best and smartest thing to do is just walk away, or at most, make a mention to someone in charge that this or that offended you.

And this is not only applicable to Islam. Recently a lot of religions staked their claim. The Dutch bible belt is more lit up than ever, and everyone is so ready to start some sort of 'holy war'. It's pathetic. And the worst part is that everyone who is religious and friended to this journal does not fit in to the group I just described. Therefore, I apologize to this specific group if they were offended. All the rest of you can suck a doorknob.

I am SO done with religion.

I don't like politics. The reason for that is explained in one of my favorite movies of all times, The Boondock Saints 2: "There's two kinds of people in this world when you boil it all down. You got your talkers and you got your doers. Most people are just talkers, all they do is talk. But when it is all said and done, it's the doers that change this world. And when they do that, they change us, and that's why we never forget them. So which one are you? Do you just talk about it, or do you stand up and do something about it? Because believe you me, all the rest of it is just coffee house and bullshit."

Ding-Dong motherfucker! Ding-Dong! )

Also, I have no clue where I left my voting ticket, which means I still have to go home, return with the ticket, vote and go home again... *yuck*

Also I had an inordinate amount of sleep the night before yesterday, followed by a horrible experience I'm not sure I can write about soon. My eyesight is deteriorating from the lack of sleep (I hope, it would suck if my eyesight was deteriorating period).

I've got this unshakable feeling that I'm missing something important for my apartment. I don't really want to think about it, but what's odd is that I'm not at all nervous yet. I'm just sick and tired of window shopping for stuff to put in there and watching the cost go up and up. The big project, my desk, is not making any progress. I've checked out the prices for monitor clamps, and I've got an idea of how I want to do it, but the resources? No clue. My current desk will become a dinner table and I have no chairs for it yet. I'm gonna have to get at least one more couch for the living space, although I do have a really nifty purple carpet for that part. I guess I can really make more progress after I've measured up some more stuff monday after next and I've visited Ikea for the first time. XP

But the cost, fuck me... I can afford it, but I don't really want to.

So yeah, the Internet at home has finally ceased, I must admit they waited for a long time for housemate to pay, which obviously didn't happen. But here's the funny thing. As addicted to Twitter as I have become, as used to reading my e-mail daily, as used to browsing a couple of sites a lot... Nothing has happened just yet. I still have some time at work to basically update my LJ and Twitter's on in the background there, anyway. I have noticed that my lack of going to bed on time is completely based on gaming, not on Internet. It's all kind of revealing, really.

Amusingly, I've gotten into Team Fortress 2: Mann vs. Machine the day before yesterday, and I do miss not being able to play that, but I should be focusing on getting more rest anyway. One temptation less is a period where I should at least try!

So yeah, for those who haven't been following my Twitter (and that would be the most of you, so my apologies for that), the delivery date of my apartment is the 21st of September. I've been busy this weekend getting everything ready (the floors for the bedroom will arrive and be put in on the 25th, the floors for the rest will arrive a day later and I have to put those in myself, which is good as I need to wire the place up. All seems to be going well, I'm just not sure about the room I am renting right now. Since there is a legal waiting term after canceling a room, and I got the letter last Friday, I could only cancel my room the day later, on the first, which means I can only cancel from the 1st of October, onward. I'm not sure how this shit is fixed with rent and all. I don't feel much for paying a whole month to forcibly rent this room for one day of a new month, but I'm sure I'll work that one out, one way or the other. In the worst case, I fall back another 400 Euro's for nothing. Ouch. There doesn't seem to be much info about this available on the web...

#EDIT: The landlord was very kind and has already informed me there's no rent for October and I'll get my deposit back. I do feel I need to paint a couple of damaged spots on the wall though. Transport for the 29th/30th has been taken care of. Everyone is so helpful and all is going so well! What is happening to my world? *_*

I should be sleeping in, but there are things more important, even more important than the delivery date of my apartment. I need to chronicle this before I completely forget it, And I never want to forget this. Hell, I want it to happen again:

I dreamt of Shampoo! And I don't mean, just I saw her face, like I did the last time, I mean she played an active role. Since the dream is already fading:

As detailed a dream as I can remember, may it inspire me! )

I was expecting to sleep in. Now I'm tired. But it was worth it. Hell, same time, same channel tomorrow! ♥

Dying

So yeah, the cat has been a lot more quiet last weekend - I only woke up four times between 1-5 on Saturday and possibly thrice on Sunday from 2-9. So now that that episode has ended (next weekend she'll be back at my brother's place), naturally a new one has already come to take its place. I am remembering my dreams. That's right, I've been trying so hard for the last 8 years to remember them, from meditation to a dream diary to pretty much everything, and now it just unexpectedly made its way into my life. Of course, now that I'm about to write about it, I've completely forgotten the dream of Saturday, but Sunday's dream is still there pretty much.

Cut for censorship: Includes guns, blood and gore )

There was more I wanted to write about, but I am still very preoccupied with those damn dreams. Dreams have always been kind of prescient to me - a great source of deja-vu, and I can't help but have this terrible sense of foreboding, even though both dreams were just ridiculous.

I've been hearing from a couple of people (to be honest, yours truly included!) that we (the Netherlands - funny how we only call them 'we' when we're winning) would be ranked a lot higher if the medal ranking was relative to the amount of inhabitants the country sported (pun intended). Following below is a simple import/export from Excel with a lot of copypasta'd data. The results are... Amusing. TLDR: "We"'d STILL be ranked 12th.

Medals per n Inhabitants )

Kudos for the LJ Rich Text editor for being able to take this kind of abuse (Although it messed up the original borders and spacing!). XD Also WOW Grenada! \*_*/

#EDIT: As has been pointed out by a colleague, there's no need to update this one later, because there's a better looking, automated version of it. Probably with better numbers too... XD

It's weird, but the more my life starts rockin', the less I seem to be sleeping. I am writing this entry severely sleep-deprived, so please forgive me for doing this, but I need to get this off my chest before I can resume my (finally slightly successful) programming. (Actually, I'm gonna be mostly coding, and write some during my down-time)

You know the phrase "you don't know what you [got], 'til it's gone"? That phrase is utter bullshit. The moment something is replaced by something else, you put that something on the back burner and won't think about it until it's been brought up by someone. Like abandonware. Used to be a major hobby of mine, but hardly anyone will ever hear me talk about it anymore.

Big game rant. Worth reading, I think )

One thing I do miss now that I don't "got" it anymore: Sleep. I'm babysitting a cat (fossil, 19 years old), that first started meowing at 5 in the morning last week, but it has gotten earlier and earlier. Last night she was at it at 1 o'clock. At one point she'll be consistently messing up my sleep cycle. I do like cats though. XP Also, I've been working out recently, to attempt to be more fit for a cosplay I still wish to do. My sleep deprivation has so far not done much to my exercise routine, but I fear it might start hindering my schedule soon. I may have to put the cat in my brother's room overnight...

Disclaimer: As stated at the beginning, I am severely sleep deprived, and I am coding and compiling (also searching databases) on and off while writing this, so it might lack coherency from time to time. The views expressed herein are my own and without filter, I mean to insult no individual, so use your own filter wherever required. I still believe (hope?) that there are some decent managers out there that aren't in it for the bonus, that intend to stay around for longer than 2-4 years. Managers that can see what's good for the company, even when it isn't good for the wallet for the first year (i.e. where long-term vision defines more than 5 years). Cats rule, kthx.

Indeed, X-posted to Twitter
lemau: Smiling Shampoo ^^ (Smile)
I haven't heard actively from the mouse in a while. Little fucker has left me oversensitive to sound, so I'm still not sleeping very well, but I caught up pretty well over the weekend. Other than that, after a day's work, I managed to get an old game working again, which took up a lot of my remaining, conscious weekend. This game is Final Fantasy 7. The operating system is Windows 7. The final solution... not even that hard, surprisingly. All one really has to do to run Final Fantasy VII in Windows 7 is:
1. Install the game
2. Patch to 1.02
3. Install the latest Aali's Custom Driver (Which is also included in Remix, but this works better, apparently... For most people skipping steps 2 and 3 would've worked... Not me, of course!)
4. Install Final Fantasy 7 Remix

And that, as they say, is that. The Remix Mod contains a hell of a lot of awesome game upgrades which make the game even more awesome to play. I'm not sure if the damage breaker applies to everything in game (it does to limits, at least, and since I only made it to Nibelheim in the three limited days I got right now, I can't tell.

Anyway, this is what has kept me from enthusiastically flaunting my new-built apartment, in its glory. It's not finished yet, but I'm really thrilled about it now (apparently, not as thrilled as getting FF7 to work, which says more about the game than the apartment XD) - anyway, I took some pictures, which I'd gladly show, but the moment I get home, I pretty much have three things in mind - Clean the place (to prevent rodents from returning), do administrative stuff for the apartment, and game the rest of the day away.

A horrible revelation: I have packed up all my modeling and celling equipment, so I can take those with me ASAP. That means that even if I wanted to, I couldn't work on either my fancel (which STILL isn't finished!) or my statue (it's been over a year now!). I really need a drawing/hobby table in my apartment. It doesn't have to be an expensive one, just needs the basics, i.e. being able to tilt and having a level holder for my painting equipment.

The biggest challenge in terms of furniture will be my computer desk. I want to face my living room (which could be augmented by a beamer at one point) whilst sitting behind my desk, but I've only got 129 cm to work with. This means that I'm going to have to make some sort of quarter-circle style desk, which will need to be able to house my PC, two monitors (one should be able to face two different ways, because of the Wii), and myriads of CD's and DVD's. I'm definitely going to need a new desk chair (a fixed one without wheels) as this one is about ready to fall apart, much like its predecessor. I think I should go with a more sturdy one this time around, which will be more expensive, I fear.

Above this place there will be two shelves - one for my plush mice (irony~), and one for my books (it's not like I have a million of those), although I'm not sure if I want my books in the living room, mostly because they'll be exposed to sunlight there, which will damage the coloring. Instead I might move them to a book case in the sleeping room, but that'll be a last-minute decision. The glass desk I have right now will henceforth become a dining table - what it was originally made for - and I'm going to need an extra couch (or two) and a proper coffee table. I intend to also last-minute these pieces of equipment at Ikea (since the first couch is from there as well).

One corner will be dedicated to housing my brother, in case of emergencies. It's partially shielded from the rest of the room by supports, so it might work. The one downside is that the place is noisier than expected: I can hear the trains passing by much better than I thought, and there is an inbuilt air flow regulator (which I hope will be much quieter in night-time mode).

Amusingly, the bedroom is smaller than I imagined, which might get me into trouble, but that is something I'll find out about later, as well. For now, all I need to fit in there is a closet, my dumbbells, a bed and a night stand (and optionally a bookcase), which will work perfectly. As I purchase more gym equipment, however, this may prove to be a challenge.

So yeah, I got everything pretty much worked out, I think. I just hope I can make about 75% of it. Striving for 110%, of course. Like I said, the biggest challenge will be the computer desk. ^_~

OK, so the critter hasn't shown it's face in two days. My extermination equipment has not been delivered yet, but I haven't seen the vermin, and I'm not sure if I heard it. I'm pretty sure it didn't just up and leave, but I'm glad it's staying quiet. I still find myself hypersensitive to sounds, settling of metal (fridge), heater toggling on and off, people walking around (quietly), and sometimes it sounds like something falls on the floor, which might be him, but I'm not sure.

Viewing my apartment this afternoon. There will be pictures. Also I asked tomorrow off. It's not like I can't use the cache of days I have remaining, but I'm not much use to anyone if I am in this deplorable state. At least the worst has past.

I hope. o_o;

Cleaned up the second part of my room, found a mouse hole right near my bed. poured a quarter of a liter of vinegar down there (heads all the way to ground level behind there). Slept for 6 hours. Welcome record of the past 5 days. Ordered all kinds of mouse repellent and poison, should arrive today, after that, things are going to change in my favor. The time of mice is over. Last part of the room today. Hope I'll be in a better state. After that, catching up sleep. Sleep is good.
